Just Being Scary

The hills are alive
With the sound of goblins
But they certainly don't
Just sing for the thrill
No, they sing because
There are goblin laws
That say if a goblin doesn't sing he will
Turn into a pretty yellow daffodil

The fields are alive
With the sound of ghouls
But they don't sing
So that you'll think they are fools
No, if they don't sing
Five hundred songs by Spring
The lot of them will all
Turn into mushrooms and toadstools

It's not easy any more just being scary
Just as an elf or leprechaun or fairy
Though they are all now sweet and clean
They used to be dirt-black and mean
But they had a fatal flaw
And broke some supernatural law
That protected them from the nasty fate
Of turning into things that love
From being happy things that hate
 
The creeks are alive
With the sound of trolls
And though singing isn't one
Of their primary goals
They will sing on and on
From the dusk till the dawn
Lest they find themselves revised
Into essentially new roles

No, it's not easy any more just being vile
Though you're committed to the fact that it's Worthwhile
There are some things that Nature asks
Most will, unfortunately, be tasks
That you don't really want to do
But if you don't, look out for you!
And here's the most unnerving thing
Most all of them require you to sing

The forest's alive
With the sound of fiends
Who aren't known to survive
On a diet of greens
They can control their nutrition
But on one condition:
They must sing to their suppers
Or turn into tangerines

No, it's not easy anymore just being scary
To the contrary
But if you have to sing to do it
You might as well go through it—
Just remember, it's not true
There's nothing to it.
